A photo of a Mongolian actress with famous Hollywood actor Johnny Depp in a red carpet ceremony went viral a couple of months ago. The film “Waiting for the Barbarians”, which stars Gana Bayarsaikhan and Johnny Depp, was set to premier on August 7, 2020.

The film was featured at the Venice Film Festival in September 2019, and has Mongolian audiences eagerly anticipating its cinematic release. However, the filmmakers didn’t announce if it’s going to be released in cinemas or digitally, since the COVID19 lockdown situation brought uncertain for the film industry. Even if the film doesn’t get released in cinemas, Mongolian fans will undoubtedly find a way to watch it online.

Gana is an up and coming Mongolian actress who already debuted in Hollywood films and series. She had credited roles on “Ex Machina” (2014) and “BenHur” (2016). She also played a part in one of the most famous TV series of last 10 years, “Peaky Blinders”.

“Waiting for the Barbarians” is a drama film directed by Ciro Guerra and tells the story of a magistrate working in a distant outpost who questions his loyalty and reason to be loyal to the empire. Gana played a role of “The girl”. Robert Pattinson is also featured in a big role in the movie. Pattinson has a lot of fans in Mongolia, with the Mongolian social media community buzzing about him and the film on Thursday.

Few Mongolian actors made it to Hollywood. According to the experts, filmmakers are turning to the Asian market as Hollywood script writing and film theme are becoming repetitive after many years of mass film producing.

South Korean film “Parasite” (2019) opened a gateway for Asian filmmakers and actors to challenge themselves in the western film world when it won the Oscars. Mongolian actors are seen as “drama powerhouse” by the international experts as the philosophy of teachers and coaches of most of the actors are based on theatrical acting methods. Gana is the latest Mongolian actress to make a major breakthrough.
