Mongolia sees 60% decline in foreign workers

In the second quarter of 2020, 3,900 citizens of 92 foreign countries were working in Mongolia for the purpose of earning wages and income under employment contracts, or doing volunteer work without the purpose of earning income. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of foreign employees decreased by 5,800 people (60 percent).

Some 3,200 (82.3 percent) of employed foreigners are men and 700 (17.7 percent) are women. Some 34.5 percent of foreign workers employed in Mongolia are from China, 8 percent are from Russia, 7.3 percent are from Australia, 6 percent are from South Korea, 5.1 percent are from the United States, 4.9 percent are from Vietnam, 3.9 percent are from South Africa, 3.8 percent are from the Philippine­s, 2.8 percent are from the United Kingdom, 2.8 percent are from Canada, and 20.9 percent are from other countries.

By age group, 16.5 percent are 45 to 49 years old, 15.3 percent are 35 to 39 years old, 14.4 percent are 40 to 44 years old, and 0.3 percent is under 20 years old. About 1,800 or 46.5 percent of foreigners working in Mongolia work in Ulaanbaata­r, 1,000 or 25.7 percent in the central region, 700 or 18.6 percent in the eastern region, about 200 in the Khangai region, and about 100 in the western region.

In terms of occupation­s, 1,600 (40.6 percent) of the employed foreign workers are specialist­s, and the least number of foreign workers or 0.03 percent are working in agricultur­e, forestry and fishing.

The number of employed foreigners decreased by 435 (10.1 percent) from the previous quarter. For instance, foreign workers in wholesale and retail trade, car and motorcycle maintenanc­e decreased by 137 (18.4 percent), constructi­on by 19 (14.6 percent), education by 133 (13.6 percent), and mining by 5 (0.3 percent).
