Man isolated at NCID after eating marmot meat while traveling

Since the beginning of the year, six suspected marmot plague cases, three confirmed cases and one death were registered nationwide. In the past, marmot plague was recorded in 137 soums of 17 provinces. Relevant officials reported about the inspection carried out to prevent marmot plague on July 20.

The National Research Center for Zoonotic Disease highlighte­d that even with warnings to prevent the spread of marmot plague; cases of marmot eating and poaching are still being registered.

According to the center, suspected cases of marmot plague have been reported in Uyench soum of Khovd Province, Erdene soum of Gobi-Altai Province and Khishig Undur soum of Bulgan Province. Latest suspected case of the marmot plague was registered on July 19. More specifical­ly, in Khishig Undur soum, Bulgan Province, a man ate marmot meat while traveling back to Ulaanbaata­r. He then called the 103 hotline and was isolate at the NCID.

Head of the National Research Center for Zoonotic Disease N.Tsogbadrak­h warned that some people died of not only eating marmot meat, but also using it for medical purposes.

“Some people hide that they ate marmot meat and put hospital staff at risk. People are suffering from marmot plague due to their negligence. As a result, their health and lives are being lost. Whose infected with marmot plague are at risk. In addition to eating marmot meat, you should not believe the rumors that it is good for your health and beauty.”

In order to prevent the marmot plague epidemic, the Ulaanbaata­r Police Department is monitoring vehicles entering Ulaanbaata­r checkpoint­s. Drivers' luggage is being checked. In the first six months of this year, 120 marmots were detected at checkpoint­s.
