50% discount offered on coal briquettes through April 2021
Coal briquettes will be sold to 220,000 households in ger areas at a 50 percent discount or 75,000 MNT per ton from December 3, 2020 to April 1, 2021, according to the government’s decision on December 2. Ulaanbaatar residents consume 4,000 tons of refined fuel per day in winter and about 120,000 tons per month.
Currently, 23 enterprises are delivering coal briquettes from the plant to more than 100 distribution points in the capital. According to the decree of the Ulaanbaatar mayor, 70,000 tons of coal briquettes have been stored in six central districts. There are more than 800 coal briquette outlets active in Ulaanbaatar.
In addition, about 10,000 households in the target group will receive free coal briquettes this winter. Reports on smoke inhalation cases are being recorded on a daily basis. To date, no cases have been reported. Working groups in each district are focusing on cleaning stoves and chimneys. In addition, clearing the chimney is a form of protection.
City officials say Ulaanbaatar’s air pollution decreased by 50 percent since the implementation of Government Resolution No. 62, which banned the use of raw coal in the city. Many agree that the air pollution level was visibly lower than previous years. Anti-air pollution authorities reported that aim to reduce air pollution by 80 percent. As a result, the ban on raw coal has been expanded, five khoroos have been added in the anti-air pollution zone, and almost half of lowpressure stoves in the city have been converted to use briquettes instead of raw coal.
