Songinokhairkhan by-election to be discussed next week
On December 2, the Standing Committee on State Structure convened and postponed the discussion of two issues.
During the meeting, the Democratic Party caucus in Parliament presented its request to take a five-day break from the discussion of the bill on election submitted by the president.
Chairman of the standing committee L.EnkhAmgalan accepted the request and conceded to a five-day break.
During the meeting, the standing committee was set to discuss a draft resolution on scheduling by-elections in the Songinokhairkhan District for Parliament and setting a date for polling. However, the Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) caucus in Parliament has proposed a postponement.
Chairman of the MPP caucus D.Togtokhsuren said, “We are proposing a oneweek postponement due to the preparation of cost estimates.”
The majority of the members of the standing committee agreed the proposal and the issue of setting a date for the by-election will be discussed next week.
D.Sumiyabazar, who was elected from Songinokhairkhan District to Parliament, was appointed as Ulaanbaatar mayor and must give up his seat in the legislature as the current law allows four lawmakers to be appointed to Cabinet aside from the prime minister. Therefore, a byelection is to be held in the district to replace him.
In accordance with the Law on Elections of Mongolia, a by-election is to be held in the second week of June or the second week of October in the event of a vacant seat.
