Water drainage to be installed in Bayanburd and Doloon Buudal
Chief Engineer of the Capital City Department of Geodesy and Water Facilities S.Batsaikhan reported about the water drainage and flood water dam cleaning to the Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office on May 5. The department is responsible for 145 kilometers of flood protection dams, 187 km of water drainage lines, network maintenance, repair, installation, and cleaning.
S.Batsaikhan spoke to reporters about drainage and flood water dam repairs in the city.
In how many locations are water drainage and flood dams being cleaned during the lockdown?
There are 145 kilometers of flood protection dams in 53 locations in the capital city. According to the plan, we clean, repair and maintain all dams and canals in Ulaanbaatar. Two brigades are clearing the flood dams in 3rd and 4th khoroolol and the flood embankment on Peace Avenue. The cleaning work is at 20 to 30 percent.
What do you plan to do in the future?
We are planning to build a new drainage network in Bayanburd and Doloon Buudal. As part of the renovation work, a 0.6 kilometer long flood embankment is planned to be rehabilitated from Petrovis gas station to the western junction of Geser Temple.
Flood protection structures under the jurisdiction of the Capital City Department of Geodesy and Water Facility are the most important objects that protect the lives, health and property of citizens from potential flood risks. Therefore, we urge citizens not to dump their waste in flood embankments and not to dispose of their domestic wastewater.
The 145 kilometers of flood protection dams and canals in Ulaanbaatar are overseen by district landscaping services. We regularly transport waste in flood protection dams.
On average, more than 20,000 cubic meters of sludge is transported and removed to nearby landfills each year. The main pollution of the flood protection dam is caused by household waste. This poses a risk of flooding.
Due to the high cost of flood protection canals, it is economically difficult to build many kilometers of canals each year. Therefore, flood protection dams and canals are being planned and built in stages in the capital city.
