Peace Bridge renovated and back in business

- By B.DULGUUN

The Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office reopened Peace Bridge on Saturday after nine days of repairs, remodeling and redecorating.

General repairs for the landmark erected in 1963 was originally scheduled in August but the city mayor decided to kick it off on April 29, taking advantage of the recent lockdown to complete the repairs with minimal complications and traffic congestion. Besides fixing the road, pedestrian sidewalk, fences, and street lamps on the bridge were renewed to prevent potential risks and spruce up the city image. The office says three coats of paint was applied on the fences along the bridge to ensure they last as long as possible.

Head of the Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office T.Gantumur noted, “A section of 7,200 square meters of Peace Bridge was stripped three centimeters deep and covered with new asphalt. We replaced and repainted 54 street lamps. The four resting areas along the bridge were fixed, remodeled and repainted. We planned to create rubber paving on the 1,400-square-meter sidewalks on either side of the bridge in accordance with international standards, but fell short of supplies for an area of 400 square meters. This is related to disruptions at the border of Erenhot city, China.”

The bridge had much more cracks and deeper holes than expected, which also led to the shortage of supplies. T.Gantumur shared plans to resume the construction of rubber paving once supplies arrive. He assured that the bridge and sidewalks will remain open during the remainder of repairs.
