Mongolian caricature artists display joint exhibition
On the occasion of April Fools’ Day on April 1, local artists of the “Shogch Biir” Association of Mongolian Caricature Artists opened a new joint exhibition at the Mongolian Art Gallery.
A caricature is a rendered image showing the features of its subject in a simplified or exaggerated way through sketching, pencil strokes, or other forms of artistic drawing.
The exhibition features about 100 caricatures by 18 artists, namely Ts.Baidy, P.Tsegmid, T.Mandir, S.Tsogtbayar, A.BatErdene, S.Chimeddorj, N.Ulziibat, S.Altangerel and N.Khuyagt and State Honored Artists N.Amarsaikhan, M.Amarkhuu, N.Myanganzam, S.Bold, M.Molomjamts, Ch.Tsetsegdari, R.GalOd, D.Tsogt and N.Orgil.
This year’s exhibition features caricature portraits, friendly jokes, and pieces about welfare and political jokes. Head of the association M.Molomjamts said, “Not every artist can be a caricature artist. Caricatures make people happy, laugh, and think. There are 30 caricature artists in Mongolia. This year’s exhibition is not limited to a specific theme or subject. Caricature artists should enjoy their freedom on this day of comedy. Caricature artists show the people what is not right in society, open their eyes to societal issues and give friendly warnings to politicians through their art.”
The association hopes to organize the “Shogch Biir” (Mocking Brush) exhibition on a regular basis. In cooperation with the Ulaanbaatar Department of Culture and Arts, it plans to hold a caricature competition called “Marzan Sharav”, publish a book on caricature artists and hold an exhibition on the culture of the city.
The “Shogch Biir” Association of Mongolian Caricature Artists was established in October 2021. Caricature artists will showcase their works until April 8 at the Mongolian Art Gallery.*
