G.Amartuvshin declares to give up his parliamentary immunity
Member of Parliament G.Amartuvshin announced on April 9 that he has requested a suspension of his legislative or parliamentary immunity to get investigated for his involvement in the issue of Development Bank. Parliament is yet to decide whether to suspend his immunity.
G.Amartuvshin, “I am proud and supportive of the protest of our youth. We must leave behind the 30 years we spent in the mud and move forward. I call on the members of Parliament to suspend their immunity and get investigated as a citizen and resolved this issue once and for all.”
Since last year, G.Amartuvshin has been under scrutiny for allegedly issuing a loan of 33 billion MNT to a company affiliated with legislators G.Damdinnyam and Kh.Gankhuyag when he served as the director of Development Bank of Mongolia.
The term of office of a member of Parliament is four years. All three legislators mentioned above were elected to office in the 2020 parliamentary election. G.Amartuvshin served as the executive director of Development Bank for six months until he resigned on December 31, 2019 to run for the parliamentary election.
Under the law, Parliament can suspend the immunity of a member of Parliament in the following cases:
• When the Prosecutor General submits a proposal to Parliament to arrest a parliamentarian in the course of his crime or at the crime scene with evidence
• When a criminal case was opened against a parliamentarian and the Prosecutor General submits a proposal to Parliament
In G.Amartuvshin’s case, no criminal case has been opened against him. However, as he has voluntarily requested to have his immunity suspended, Parliament can discuss and approve his request.
