L.Ankhbayar: Infected people are more likely to die of heart attack
The Health Ministry reported on April 10 that post-COVID-19 syndrome is mostly associated with an increased risk of heart failure. For instance, a growing number of people have been seeking medical attention for symptoms such as risk of cardiovascular disease and changes in blood pressure after being infected with COVID-19. In recent years, cardiovascular diseases have become prevalent among people experiencing post-COVID-19 syndrome in Mongolia. As a result, people are dying of shock, stroke and heart attack due to lack of understanding and information.
Clinical Professor at the First State Central Hospital L.Ankhbayar talked about this in the interview below.
Many people with COVID-19 have been facing cases of blood clots, high blood pressure and sudden strokes. How many people are coming to the hospital due to such symptoms?
Since 2020, many people without any cardiovascular disease were infected with COVID-19. The majority of those admitted to the hospital experienced changes in their cardiovascular system as a result of the disease. Our hospital is unique in providing cardiovascular care services. We provide assistance in cardiovascular surgery, coronary heart disease diagnosis and treatment, and intensive care. The number of people diagnosed with coagulopathy and infarction due to the post-COVID-19 syndrome is increasing.
On average, how many people are treated at your hospital’s heart center per month? Has it increased since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic?
On average, 1,300 people are referred for cardiac examinations, 2,000 for heart disease treatment and more than 1,500 for outpatient examinations. Around 210 to 230 people are also undergoing medical examinations. After COVID-19, the demand for doctors has increased. The COVID-19 virus alters the cardiovascular system, leading to recurrent diseases in people with underlying diseases and causing severe illnesses in those without an underlying health problem. In other words, the blood vessels dilate and become tired. Increased permeability can cause inflammation. This can lead to the postCOVID-19 syndrome.
