Kh.Nyambaatar: I will submit the petition to dismiss George Chen from his position at Meta

- By D.DASHMAA

For the first time, Mongolia is going to have a law to control the online environment. If there is a need for control in the digital environment, it is. The increasing number of frauds and sexual exploitation by criminals online is due to our lack of education in the use of electronic devices. News broke last week that a teenage girl was tricked into taking nude pictures of her, then threatened to satisfy her desires, and then force to evaluate her body. Everyone under this news was cursing the perpetrator. Therefore, there is a need for control and regulation in the online environment. However, it is important not to infringe on the right to speak and express one’s opinion.

Along with the news that the President will veto the social media law, George Chen, Director of the Central Asian branch of Meta LLC, declared that Kh.Nyambaatar, Minister of Justice and Internal Affairs lied through his Twitter account. Specifically, Kh.Nyambaatar wrote on his Twitter page in September of last year, “We will work together with Meta LLC on the draft law on the protection of human rights in the digital environment, and we will establish a joint working group in the field of security protection.” The press also reported about it at the time. But under the tweet, George Chen wrote on Friday, “This is a lie. I did not see the draft of the legislation, I saw it after it was approved.”

After George Chen’s explanation, A.Byambajargal, a representative of Meta Company in Mongolia, said, “Last year, representatives of Meta and I met with the Minister of Justice and Internal Affairs. According to the above tweet, there was a discussion about working together and it didn’t start. I took the old draft of the law from that time and gave it to the translator, but it was not given to Meta. Of course, we will always respect the right of people to express their opinions, and our legal team has started studying the new law in English.”

However, in Kh.Nyambaatar’s explanation given on February 1 “The next issue is the application to dismiss George Chen, director of public policy for Central Asia, China, and Mongolia, on Monday. The reason is not personal. It is possible to openly slander the government of an independent country on social media. Secondly, Meta has no right to be involved in the country’s internal affairs. Specifically, harassing emails were sent to some Mongolian government officials. They put pressure on Mongolia, such as putting sanctions on Mongolia and putting pressure on the United States.”
