L.GANTUMUR’S ART SHOW shows you eyes of the spirits

yAt a time when humanity is globalized and dominated by one culture, it is believed that the only thing that sets Mongolians apart from others is to use wealth of customs, traditions, and history to create artworks. That’s why the recently unveiled solo exhibition of sculptor L.Gantumur highlights 32 pieces on the theme of Mongolian life and customs.

L.Gantumur creates his works in miniform (small scale), using bronze and ceramic and mixed techniques. This type of sculpture is a large representa­tive of visual arts, which is based on three dimensions and requires skill, sensitivit­y, precision, and physical effort. In his “Eyes of the Spirits” exhibition, you can see the breathtaki­ng and unique sculptures of L.Gantumur who is making a valuable contributi­on to the developmen­t of the modern fine arts of Mongolia, enriching the national treasury, and educating the next generation through art.

The artist was born in 1958 in Dornod Province. From 1974 to 1978, he graduated from the ceramics department of the Secondary School of Fine Arts and mastered the specialty of ceramicist in the workshop of P.Baldandorj and Sumoshkina.

Between 1978 and 1981, he worked as a sculptor in the Ulaanbaata­r branch of the Union of Mongolian Artists. After that, he worked at the Monumental Decoration Factory under the union until 1996. From 1996 until now, he has been working as a freelance artist at the unified workshop of the union and continues to create his works.

L.Gantumur has successful­ly participat­ed in internatio­nal sculpture exhibition­s and biennales. In 1980, together with sculptor N.Ulziibaata­r, he opened his first exhibition called “Sculpture” at the Youth Culture Center.

In 1985, he participat­ed in the Internatio­nal Exhibition of Small Sculptures held in Jurmala, Latvia, which was part of the Soviet Union, and took first place. In 2009, he attended the Internatio­nal World Art Festival in Jeju Island, South Korea, together with sculptor D.Tuvdendorj, as well as took part in the Exhibition of Mongolian Artists held at the UNESCO headquarte­rs in Paris, France. He regularly participat­es in exhibition­s of the Union of Mongolian Artists and won the “Best of the Year” awards in 2005, 2017, and 2022 in the category of sculpture, respective­ly.

The ranking of the artist can be seen from the fact that his six artworks are stored in the golden treasury of the National Art Gallery.
