Thura U Shwe Mann calls for in­ter­na­tional flood sup­port

Thura U Shwe Mann the Speaker of the Pyi­daungsu Hlut­taw and Pyithu Hlut­taw as writ­ten an open let­ter to the in­ter­na­tional com­mu­nity call­ing for sup­port to ad­dress what he de­scribes as an un­prece­dented flood sit­u­a­tion.

The let­ter, dated 4 Au­gust, states that, ’’ In or­der to save many lives of peo­ple in af­fected ar­eas and to pre­vent fur­ther neg­a­tive con­se­quences of the flood­ing, ur­gent as­sis­tance of the In­ter­na­tional Com­mu­nity is needed.’’

It con­tin­ues, ‘’I would like to ex­press my heart­felt ap­pre­ci­a­tion for the good­will and con­cern of friendly na­tions, es­pe­cially neigh­bour­ing coun­tries and ASEAN coun­tries. The timely con­tri­bu­tions of China and Thai­land are most ap­pre­ci­ated.

The ini­tia­tives in ad­dress­ing [the] flood sit­u­a­tion of the UN. NGOs. INGOs and Civil So­ci­ety are en­cour­ag­ing.

The role of the lo­cal and in­ter­na­tional media for the up­dated news and in­for­ma­tion is also ap­pre­ci­ated. I welcome the pe­ti­tion at the Obama Ad­min­is­tra­tion Web­site for emer­gency helps to flood vic­tims in Myan­mar.’’

The let­ter ends, ‘’We fer­vent- ly hope for the as­sis­tance of the in­ter­na­tional com­mu­nity for the flood vic­tims as the cur­rent dis­as­ter oc­curred in Myan­mar is very ex­ten­sive and it is nec­es­sary to ad­dress col­lec­tively.’’
