Moon­shine shops raided in Yangon

IN­SPEC­TIONS have been car­ried out on il­le­gal al­co­hol shops since June 1, said Ma­jor Gen­eral Aung Thu, deputy min­is­ter of Home Af­fairs.

The shops are be­ing raided as part of a plan drawn up on April 10 to con­trol il­le­gal al­co­hol and beer pro­duc­tion or im­port­ing, he said.

“We started tak­ing ac­tion ac­cord­ing to the plan on June 1,” said Ma­jor Gen­eral Aung Thu.

The Gen­eral Ad­min­is­tra­tive De­part­ment of the min­istry is co­or­di­nat­ing ef­forts to in­ves­ti­gate il­le­gal al­co­hol sales and is car­ry­ing out raids fol­low­ing tip-offs.

Since April 2016, nearly 14,300 peo­ple ar­rested and faced le­gal ac­tion for sell­ing al­co­hol with­out li­censes un­der the Ex­cise Law.

Dur­ing the same pe­riod, close to 4000 peo­ple were ar­rested for fail­ing to com­ply with al­co­hol sell­ing reg­u­la­tions al­though they had li­censes, the deputy min­is­ter said. The govern­ment has in­ten­si­fied oper­a­tions against boot­leg prod­ucts na­tion­wide – Pyae Thet Phyo
