By-elections will be fair and free, UEC assures
U HLA Thein, chairman of the Union Elections Commission, on Thursday assured political parties that elections, including the by-elections in November, will be fair and free.
“We will hold a free and fair election. We want political parties to believe and cooperate. They promise to write their own history,” U Nanda Hla Myint of the Union Solidarity and Development Party ( USDP) quoted the UEC chairman as saying during a meeting with representatives of political parties in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday.
U Hla Thein said that as UEC chair he will carry out righteous action and is under no one’s influence. He said elections will be open and fair and the results will reflect the people’s will. .
More than 60 political parties attended the half-day meeting, according to U Nanda Hla Myint.
He said his party will be closely watching the actions of the chairman.
“We need to observe his actions to see if he is a man of his word. We can’t trust him yet,” said U Nanda Hla Myint.
U Ba Shein of the Arakan National Party’s central executive committee also said the UEC chair’s words should be reflected by his actions.
Ninety-two parties will compete in the November by-election for 13 vacant seats.
