By-elec­tions will be fair and free, UEC as­sures

U HLA Thein, chair­man of the Union Elec­tions Com­mis­sion, on Thurs­day as­sured po­lit­i­cal par­ties that elec­tions, in­clud­ing the by-elec­tions in Novem­ber, will be fair and free.

“We will hold a free and fair elec­tion. We want po­lit­i­cal par­ties to be­lieve and co­op­er­ate. They prom­ise to write their own his­tory,” U Nanda Hla Myint of the Union Sol­i­dar­ity and De­vel­op­ment Party ( USDP) quoted the UEC chair­man as say­ing dur­ing a meet­ing with rep­re­sen­ta­tives of po­lit­i­cal par­ties in Nay Pyi Taw on Thurs­day.

U Hla Thein said that as UEC chair he will carry out right­eous ac­tion and is un­der no one’s in­flu­ence. He said elec­tions will be open and fair and the re­sults will re­flect the peo­ple’s will. .

More than 60 po­lit­i­cal par­ties at­tended the half-day meet­ing, ac­cord­ing to U Nanda Hla Myint.

He said his party will be closely watch­ing the ac­tions of the chair­man.

“We need to ob­serve his ac­tions to see if he is a man of his word. We can’t trust him yet,” said U Nanda Hla Myint.

U Ba Shein of the Arakan Na­tional Party’s cen­tral ex­ec­u­tive com­mit­tee also said the UEC chair’s words should be reflected by his ac­tions.

Ninety-two par­ties will com­pete in the Novem­ber by-elec­tion for 13 va­cant seats.
