The Yangon City Development Committee has ordered dairy farms in Insein township to move out of the city because of complaints about their smell, Yangon City Mayor U Maung Maung Soe said on Wednesday.

The 13 licensed dairy farms in Sawbwargyi Gone of Insein have been ordered to move by September 30, Yangon Mayor U Maung Maung Soe said at the regional Hluttaw meeting on Thursday.

“We will monitor them until they complete the move,” U Maung Maung Soe told the regional lawmakers.

He said the city issued the order to the 13 farms because the operators failed to implement proper waste disposal systems based on city guidelines. There are 125 cows and 30 goats on the farms, which are located near Yangon International Airport.

U Maung Maung Soe was responding to concerns raised by U Thar Aung, an MP for Insein, that the drains on the farms are full of cow waste, which has drawn complaints from nearby residential areas.

“They (the farms) are discarding livestock waste into the drains of the township,” MP U Thar Aung told the parliament, providing photos of the waste.

U Maung Maung Soe said that they had ordered the farms to discard its wastes properly by digging pits, but YCDC officials who inspected the farms found that they had ignored the demand.

He said that persistent complaints about the smell by nearby residents had prompted the city eviction notice.

The farms had been granted licenses by the veterinary and slaughterhouse department of YCDC.
