Woman wanted for fraud arrested in Mandalay
A tour operator arrested by the police in Mandalay on Wednesday in connection with an alleged fraud has been granted bail of K30 million by a local court.
POLICE have arrested a suspect who faces charges of fraud in Mandalay, a Lower House (Phyithu Hluttaw) legislator and the police told the Myanmar Times yesterday.
The suspect who was wanted by the police for financial fraud was arrested on the Yangon-mandalay Highway late Wednesday, according to U Aung Hlaing Win, Member of Parliament for Mingalardon Township.
She was arrested by the police at around 6pm at Thee Kone tollgate near the 284th milepost of the highway in Mandalay, he said.
“Highway police inspected the car she was in and identified her as being on the wanted-persons list and was arrested. Now, she is under investigation by Mandalay Region’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID),” he said.
The Mingalardon Township police station has filed a claim against her under section 420 of the Penal Code after the tour company she coowned failed to return more than K200million (US$128,000) for a pilgrimage tour that failed to take place. “After the arrest, we transferred her to a local police station,” Police Major Zarni Maung from Highway Police Force Office said.
A local court in Mandalay yesterday allowed the suspect to post bail after a brief hearing on her case.
Court officials said the judge ordered the suspect to post bail amounting to K30 million for bail. The trial of her case will start next week.
The suspect maintained her innocence saying she had been unfairly detained.
