Woman wanted for fraud ar­rested in Man­dalay

A tour op­er­a­tor ar­rested by the po­lice in Man­dalay on Wed­nes­day in con­nec­tion with an al­leged fraud has been granted bail of K30 mil­lion by a lo­cal court.

PO­LICE have ar­rested a sus­pect who faces charges of fraud in Man­dalay, a Lower House (Phyithu Hlut­taw) leg­is­la­tor and the po­lice told the Myan­mar Times yes­ter­day.

The sus­pect who was wanted by the po­lice for fi­nan­cial fraud was ar­rested on the Yan­gon-man­dalay High­way late Wed­nes­day, ac­cord­ing to U Aung Hlaing Win, Mem­ber of Par­lia­ment for Min­galar­don Town­ship.

She was ar­rested by the po­lice at around 6pm at Thee Kone toll­gate near the 284th mile­post of the high­way in Man­dalay, he said.

“High­way po­lice in­spected the car she was in and iden­ti­fied her as be­ing on the wanted-per­sons list and was ar­rested. Now, she is un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion by Man­dalay Re­gion’s Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tion Depart­ment (CID),” he said.

The Min­galar­don Town­ship po­lice sta­tion has filed a claim against her un­der sec­tion 420 of the Pe­nal Code af­ter the tour com­pany she coowned failed to re­turn more than K200mil­lion (US$128,000) for a pil­grim­age tour that failed to take place. “Af­ter the arrest, we trans­ferred her to a lo­cal po­lice sta­tion,” Po­lice Ma­jor Zarni Maung from High­way Po­lice Force Of­fice said.

A lo­cal court in Man­dalay yes­ter­day al­lowed the sus­pect to post bail af­ter a brief hear­ing on her case.

Court of­fi­cials said the judge or­dered the sus­pect to post bail amount­ing to K30 mil­lion for bail. The trial of her case will start next week.

The sus­pect main­tained her in­no­cence say­ing she had been un­fairly de­tained.
