Nationwide census to include entire country
An interim census will be conducted in 2019 to collect data across the country, even in areas not under government control, a senior official says.
THE 2019 Interim Census will collect population data from all parts of the country, even areas not under Myanmar government control, said U Nyi Nyi, acting director general of the Department of Population.
“We will be collecting census data everywhere, including ethnic areas,” he told the media at an event to unveil the Social Security Report on Tuesday.
The census will be conducted in all 15 regions and states, including Nay Pyi Taw.
“We will use a sample of one or two percent of the population. For example, if there are 10 homes in an area, we will take data from one house,” he said.
The department will conduct the census next October or November to obtain statistical and population data that will be used for a decade, he said.
“The country has seen many changes and, as the socio-economic landscape evolves, better population data will be required to steer development,” he said.
No census was conducted in the 30 years after 1983. A census was made in 2014, and its data was used to generate over 1000 reports in English and Myanmar on regions, states and townships.
“Data from the census will be crucial to achieving sustainable development goals,” Labour, Immigration and Population Minister U Thein Swe said.
