Big prizes await winners of Mandalay marathon in January
WINNERS of the Mandalay Mayor’s Marathon, scheduled to be held on January 4, will get prizes worth more than K27 million (US$17,288), according to U Kyaw San Myint of the Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC).
The contest is being held in honour of the country’s 71st Independence Day. Applications will be available at municipal offices from December 15 to 31, he said.
“The prize money was increased from last year. We will give prizes to the first six seniors who cross the finish line in the 60-and-over category and the first six boys and girls who reach the finish line in the middle school category,” U Kyaw San Myint said.
The 13-mile-long race will start in front of the MCDC office at the southern Mandalay moat and its finish line will be at Mandalar Thiri Stadium on 68th street.
First place in the 60-and-over category will receive K200,000, while the next five runners in the senior division who make it to the finish line will get K50,000 each.
The first six middle school students who finish will get K100,000.
First prize in the open category, which includes runners from all ages and genders, will win K3 million. First runner-up will get K2 million, second runner-up K1.5 million, and third runner-up K1 million.
In the amateur race, first prize will be K3 million, the first runner-up will get K2 million, second runner-up K1.5 million, and third runner-up K1.2 million.
Foreigners who want to join the race will have to compete in the open category. Memorial gifts will be given to all finishers.
