Big prizes await win­ners of Man­dalay marathon in Jan­uary

WIN­NERS of the Man­dalay Mayor’s Marathon, sched­uled to be held on Jan­uary 4, will get prizes worth more than K27 mil­lion (US$17,288), ac­cord­ing to U Kyaw San Myint of the Man­dalay City Devel­op­ment Com­mit­tee (MCDC).

The con­test is be­ing held in hon­our of the coun­try’s 71st In­de­pen­dence Day. Ap­pli­ca­tions will be avail­able at mu­nic­i­pal of­fices from De­cem­ber 15 to 31, he said.

“The prize money was in­creased from last year. We will give prizes to the first six se­niors who cross the fin­ish line in the 60-and-over cat­e­gory and the first six boys and girls who reach the fin­ish line in the mid­dle school cat­e­gory,” U Kyaw San Myint said.

The 13-mile-long race will start in front of the MCDC of­fice at the south­ern Man­dalay moat and its fin­ish line will be at Man­dalar Thiri Sta­dium on 68th street.

First place in the 60-and-over cat­e­gory will re­ceive K200,000, while the next five run­ners in the se­nior di­vi­sion who make it to the fin­ish line will get K50,000 each.

The first six mid­dle school stu­dents who fin­ish will get K100,000.

First prize in the open cat­e­gory, which in­cludes run­ners from all ages and gen­ders, will win K3 mil­lion. First run­ner-up will get K2 mil­lion, sec­ond run­ner-up K1.5 mil­lion, and third run­ner-up K1 mil­lion.

In the am­a­teur race, first prize will be K3 mil­lion, the first run­ner-up will get K2 mil­lion, sec­ond run­ner-up K1.5 mil­lion, and third run­ner-up K1.2 mil­lion.

For­eign­ers who want to join the race will have to com­pete in the open cat­e­gory. Memo­rial gifts will be given to all fin­ish­ers.
