Walvis Bay waterfront

-

The waterfront here is less glam than the one in Cape Town – it’s tucked into a corner of a working harbour with cranes loading containers onto ships. But that’s part of the appeal.

Anchors @ the Jetty

This restaurant with its bright pink doors is hard to miss. It started in 2007 as a hole in the wall where you could order a coffee; now it’s a restaurant with salads and burgers (R96) on the menu. Dinner options include rump steak, calamari – an Anchors speciality – or a hefty 500 g plate of prawns (R188).

If you only want a light refreshment, try one of their fresh fruit juices or their organic ice cream. Sit at a table on the veranda or near the water at a bar counter made from an old boat. Beware: The resident pelicans might help themselves to your fish and chips! If you sit outside, you’re on dolphin duty: When you see one in the bay, ring the bell at the entrance to alert the other diners. GPS: S22.95859 E14.48182 Opening times: Tuesday to Saturday from 7.30 am to 2.30 pm and 5 pm to late; Sunday and Monday from 7.30 am to 3 pm. Contact: 00 264 64 205 762

Cuppa Musselcracker

Coffee and seafood – in one place! Cuppa Musselcracker has delicious flavoured coffees like “Angel Coffee”, with caramel sauce and roasted hazelnuts. Order one and find a cosy spot on the deck or in the library if it’s cold outside. GPS: S22.95859 E14.48182 Opening times: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7 am to 7 pm; Tuesday 7 am to 5 pm; Saturday and Sunday from 7 am to 9 pm. Contact: 00 264 81 617 8537

Oceans Restaurant

The menu here is as vast as the ocean itself: seafood, steaks, burgers, chicken dishes, wraps, salads… There are also options for kids like fish fingers and chips (R45). And when last did you have a banana split (R38)? GPS: S22.95859 E14.48182 Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday from 7.30 am until late. Buffet on Sunday: noon to 3 pm. Contact: 00 264 64 221 381

The Raft

From this restaurant on the Walvis Bay lagoon near the waterfront, you can see flamingos and pelicans up close. Sometimes a pod of dolphins arrives to keep the kayakers company.

Go here for pizzas (R52 – R159) and burgers (R45 – R69) or for eisbein with mash, red cabbage, sauerkraut and creamy apple-butter sauce (R127), served on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Where? On the esplanade next to the Walvis Bay lagoon. GPS: S22.96235 E14.48333 Opening times: Monday to Sunday from noon to 3 pm and from 6 pm to 10 pm. The bar is open until late.
