Palmwag Lodge

-

This lodge next to the Uniab River is the final stop before you enter Kaokoveld further north. Its oasis-promising palm trees have been beckoning travellers for decades.

Palmwag is surrounded by the Torra, Anabeb and Sesfontein conservation areas – known for their big cats – and visitors can go on a guided game drive (three hours; from R620 per person, drinks included). You might not even have to leave the camp to see game: Elephants occasionally visit the garden.

If you’re just passing through, stop for a light meal at the thatched restaurant next to the swimming pool or stay over and have a proper three-course dinner (R315 per person).

The stands in the campsite are close together, but there are bushes separating them so your neighbour won’t think you’re stealing his omelette recipe when you’re actually just looking for birds. The best stands are the ones next to the Uniab River. Where? 121 km from Kamanjab; 162 km from Khorixas. GPS: S19.88577 E13.93728 Rates: Camping R205 per person. Lodge accommodation R1 745 per person sharing; R2 180 single supplement; dinner and breakfast included. Contact: 00 264 81 620 6687; palmwaglodge.com
