NORTH: PLACES TO STAY

LOW SEASON

Many of these lodges lower their prices significan­tly at the height of summer (January to March, sometimes April). It gets very hot, and it can rain, but you’ll save a lot of money if you visit during these months.

COMMUNITY CAMPS

There are many community-run campsites in Damaraland and the Kaokoveld. It’s pointless to try and phone to book and usually not necessary either. Just drive in, someone will come to assist you.

KAOKOVELD & KUNENE RIVER

1 Epupa Falls Lodge On the banks of the Kunene River about 200 km north of Opuwo. Situated right on top of Epupa Falls, the lodge has a restaurant, bar and a deck. Camping from R200 p.p. (max six people per stand; there are seven stands). Three family units and one honeymoon suite: from R650 p.p. sharing B&B. Five chalets on stilts with good views; from R750 p.p. sharing B&B. 2 Omarunga Lodge This Gondwana lodge at Epupa Falls has a restaurant, bar, lapa and swimming pool. Camping from R165 p.p. (10 stands, no electricit­y). Safari tent from R1 840 p.p. sharing B&B. 4 Kapika Waterfall Lodge

Kapika’s 10 chalets have great views of the river and the waterfall. There are two camping stands with private ablution facilities: from R275 p.p. More campsites (and electricit­y) are on the cards. A double room costs R3 800 p.n. DB&B. Activities include nature walks R245 p.p, sunset drives R270 p.p, river rafting R600 p.p, and Ovahimba village tours R715 p.p. Meals are available. SADC guests receive a 25 % discount, and from December to March they offer 35 % discount – it gets really hot here in summer, but there is a pool.

5 Kunene River Lodge On the Kunene River, 50 km west of Ruacana. Most of the 12 stands are under leadwood or jackal-berry trees, with views of the river. The stands have braai facilities, power and communal ablution facilities. There are also A-frame cabins and lodge rooms. The lodge has a restaurant and a swimming pool. Camping from R225 p.p. A-frame cabin with ceiling fan from R1 342 p.p. sharing DB&B. Lodge room with aircon from R1 579 p.p. sharing DB&B. Discount if you book for two nights or longer. Dine at the lodge, go on a river cruise (R512 p.p.) or hire a fishing rod to try and catch a tiger fish (R145 per day). Birdwatchi­ng tour R484 p.p. Nearly 300 species have been recorded and some are very rare, like the Cinderella waxbill – this is the only place in southern Africa where you can see it. 6 Mavinga Lodge &

Campsite The lodge is 37 km east of Swartboois­drif, on the D3700.

RUNDU & KAVANGO RIVER 14 Simanya River Lodge

A good overnight spot if you want to cross into Angola at the Katwitwi border post (20 km away) early in the morning. Laze in the swimming pool, which overlooks the river, and dream of all the tiger fish you can catch. There are eight camping stands: R250 per adult. Each stand has private ablution facilities, a scullery and a braai. Twin-sleeper safari tent R1 000 p.n. These tents are equipped with camping beds, bedding and basic crockery. 19 Shamvura Camp One cottage, four tented units and six campsites – these are under big trees and far apart from each other. Shamvura is high on a vegetated dune. The tents and the campsite don’t overlook the river, but the main deck has a view of Angolan floodplain­s on the opposite bank. All units have power, as does the campsite. Rates from R200 p.p. for a normal stand; R230 p.p. for a private stand; R250 p.p. for a private stand with a kitchen. Tent unit R480 p.p. – two units sleep four people each, two are twin-sleepers. PALMWAG 27 Palmwag Lodge

This lodge recently became part of the Gondwana group and they are busy with renovation­s. Palmwag is surrounded by the Torra, Anabeb and Sesfontein conservati­on areas – known for their elephants and rhinos. Visitors can go on a guided game drive (three hours; from R890 p.p, drinks included). You might not even have to leave the camp to see game: Elephants occasional­ly visit the garden. If you’re just passing through, stop for a light meal at the thatched restaurant next to the swimming pool, or stay over and have a proper three-course dinner (R396 p.p.). The stands in the campsite are close together, but they are separated by bushes and boulders. The best stands are the ones next to the Uniab River. Camping R245 p.p. 28 Grootberg Lodge

This luxury lodge is on the edge of Etendeka Plateau. The view is the reason why you’ll brave the road up the mountain and swipe your credit card at the top. (Don’t worry: If the road is too much for your vehicle you’ll be fetched in a Land Cruiser.)

29 Hoada Campsite

The fun happens around the donkey boiler: The coals that warm the water for your shower will also braai your chops! 31 Oppi-Koppi Restcamp

Oppi-Koppi, on the outskirts of Kamanjab, is a great spot to spend a few days. The eight stands in the campsite each have power, an awning and a big work surface for cooking. The lodge has 12 double rooms, two luxury rooms and one family room. Sit in the bar or next to the pool and order something from the restaurant menu. 44 Ghaub Nature Reserve

& Farm In the heart of the Otavi Mountains, between Tsumeb, Otavi and Grootfonte­in, on the D3022.

The three campsites are far apart and private. Each has its own braai, bathroom and kitchen, and a small lawn to pitch your tent on – from R300 p.p. sharing. The lodge – renovated and extended buildings of a former mission station dating from 1895 – is within walking distance of the campsite. 57 Khaudum National Park

There are two main access routes: the D3315 in the south, from Tsumkwe to Sikereti, or the Katere sand road (D3309) from the north.

You’re only allowed to camp at the two official campsites. Privately run Khaudum is 56 km from the B8 through thick sand. There are six unfenced stands, each with private facilities (donkey boiler for hot water). Camping R375 p.p, plus

R130 per vehicle once-off and the park fees: R30 p.p, R10 per vehicle.

Camp The lodge is on a hill and the campsites are at its base, with a view of the valley. About 16 km from the Twyfelfont­ein rock art site. 63 Camp Kipwe Just south of Mowani – a luxury resort built around a hill in the Aba-Huab Valley.

The dome-shaped units are the same colour as the surroundin­g landscape and are built among boulders. Each unit has an outdoor bathroom so you can relax in the tub and look out over the valley. There are two camps in the reserve: Waterberg Plateau Campsite (R300) has 20 stands and two pools. Andersson Camp has four stands (from R300 p.p.) and a pool. Each stand has a braai, an awning with a table, its own shower, and a toilet in a central ablution block.

108 Zambezi Mubala Lodge

& Camp This spot is 40 km (all tar) east of Katima and one of the best options in the region. The camp part has 10 stands as well as eight self-catering safari tents (each sleeps four). Camping R237 p.p. Safari tents from R620 p.p. sharing. There’s a restaurant, camp shop and swimming pool. The lodge is a few kilometres downstream from the camp. CHOBE RIVER 109 Chobe River Campsite

The camp is 4 km west of the Ngoma border post. Six stands with private ablutions but no power (R215 p.p.). Luxury tent chalet R1 231 p.p. sharing B&B. There’s a swimming pool and a bar.
