THE SPIRIT OF NAMIBIA

Visit Copper & Coal in Walvis Bay for a taste of true Namibia in your glass.

-

In 2017, Copper & Coal distillery was found in Walvis Bay, a small harbour town in Namibia. This craft distillery produces premium handcrafted spirts in small batches – created one small batch at a time. Our passion for quality and craft integrity translates into focusing on quality over quantity, every single time. We gather the finest ingredients and transform them into the ultimate spirits, doing every part of the process right here at the distillery in Walvis Bay: from fermenting to hand bottling. We’re very proudly Namibian.

Our small team does all the work and takes the phrase ‘crafted by hand’ to a whole new level. One distiller makes every drop of all our gins: Andries van Schalkwyk, the owner. Then our tiny team bottle, label and pack each bottle of craft product – by hand because that’s the way we roll.

A TIMELINE OF EXCELLENCE

In March 2018, we launched our range of Desolate Namibian Gins, with the Classic 7 Gin paves the way into the hearts of Namibians and visitors alike. In July came our Devils Claw Oak Rested Gin followed by the Crystal Clear Gin in September. Both these are made from the root of the indigenous devil’s claw, the first gin is rested in French oak barrels to give it an unprecedented smoothness. Next came our Marula gin in October 2019, made from local Namibian marula, harvested by hand in the north of our country.

In August 2020, we launched our Forsaken range. This range comes complete with a loyalty card to the Copper Craft Club that supports local businesses, including other liquor craft products in Namibia. Every second month brings a craft box filled with not only Copper and Coal Distillery products, but also other local handcrafted Namibian products.

We stepped things up a notch in September 2020, when we launched our single-grain Arid Vodka. The first Namibian-made vodka. Fermented, distilled and bottled at our craft distillery in Walvis Bay, of course. By hand. It’s double distilled and full bodied, a vodka (hand) cut to perfection. Distilled in a custom-built column still, this is a true distillers’ cut, smooth and pure.

Then came March 2021 and our

Arid Kalahari. A triple-distilled spirt gently infused with a combination of Namibian Kalahari melon seeds, lemon peel and blue pea flowers. Each bottle is filled and numbered by hand in true craft fashion. The Kalahari melon seeds give the spirt its main flavour profile perfectly complemented by the lemon peel and blue pea flowers. The wonderful colour of the spirt is extracted from blue pea flowers.

We’re not stopping there. Our Forsaken and Arid ranges are set to expand in the coming months. Plus, there’s a whole new brand on its way.
