- -Wheels24

BMW finally launched its latest X5 M and X6 M models to local media and announced pricing for the high-performance SUVs. South Africa will only receive the full-fat Competition models.

The X5 M costs from R2 632 258 and the X6 M from R2 733 420.

They are powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with 460kW and 750Nm, an increase of 37kW over its predecessors. BMW M anoraks will notice the SUVs boast the same power outputs as the M5.

All the power is channeled to the four-wheel drive system via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. BMW says the xDrive system is has a rear-biased setup and can be adjusted in 4WD / 4WD Sport modes.

The duo wear stiffer suspension mountings and body structure compared to non-M models. These models ride on an M-specific adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers. There is active roll stabilisation, M Servotronic steering and Dynamic Stability Control via the M Dynamic Mode.

There’s also an Active M Differential to get things more lively if the drive is so inclined. A 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.8 seconds is claimed, a startling thought when one remembers these are large SUVs.

M-specific wheels are fitted to both models with 21-inch at the front and 22-inch at the rear. There is a smattering M and Competition badges to make it clear you know what you’re driving.

Four exhaust pipes dominate the rear while a large signature kidney grille in black and massive front air-intakes give the M-SUVs a menacing look.

There is a choice of three drive settings:

Road, Sport and Track settings. While standard equipment includes the carmaker’s Live Cockpit Professional with navigation system and Intelligent Personal Assistant and the Parking Assistant.

A large selection of driver assistance systems and Laser light are available as options, BMW says.
