Suspects detained for tombstone theft

WALVIS BAY – The police at Walvis Bay have arrested two employees of a local tombstone company on Friday evening when they were found in possession of three tombstones they had removed from graves at the Kuisebmond cemetery.

Erongo region’s community policing commander, Inspector Ileni Shapumba said the two men are charged with malicious property damage, alternatively sacrilege.

He said the incident happened around midnight whereby the suspects were found carrying the tombstones in the streets.

“They were caught by police officers in the street during crime prevention operations. They were questioned and detained while the police investigation continues,” Shapumba said on Friday.

Meanwhile, the police are looking for Lungameni Timotheus ( 26) who escaped from the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The police said Timotheus appeared in court for theft out of a motor vehicle and shortly after his appearance disappeared from the court without being released on bail.
