Domestic worker ‘steals’ N$700 000 from employer
A Walvis Bay domestic worker, who fled to northern Namibia after allegedly stealing about N$700 000 from his employer, appeared in court yesterday.
The man, identified as Fredrik Namalenga, reportedly went on a donation spree after allegedly stealing the N$700 000 cash from his employer’s house at Langstrand.
Crime investigations coordinator for the Erongo region Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu confirmed the incident to New Era.
The suspect was arrested over the weekend in the north after his generous act was revealed through a housebreaking at his employer, where he was employed for more than 15 years.
Court documents indicate that Namalenga allegedly stole N$700 000 on 2 December and dished out some of the money to friends, relatives and even neighbours before he left for the north.
Some people allegedly even received up to N$50 000.
A police source indicated Namalenga allegedly told a taxi driver about the huge sum of money at his employer’s house.
“The taxi driver and a friend then returned and also helped themselves to the money,” the police source said yesterday.
The owner of the house, who was away for a while, allegedly noticed that his house was broken in and money stolen.
He immediately reported the incident to the police, resulting in the arrest of Namalenga.
According to court documents, only N$200 000 of the stolen money has been recovered so far.
Namalenga, who is facing theft charges, was denied bail.
According to the State, two suspects are still at large.
Prosecution also fears Namalenga could interfere with ongoing investigations if released on bail.
His case was then postponed to 3 February by magistrate John Sindano.
