Venaani discharged from hospital after bout with Covid-19
Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) leader McHenry Venaani has been discharged from hospital where he has been hospitalised with Covid-19, the party announced yesterday.
“We are incredibly happy that he recovered very well. As a leader, when he got sick, he did not keep it a secret. He took the public in his confidence and informed them about his sickness. The message here is that Covid-19 does not discriminate. It is here and it lives with us,” said PDM secretary general Ngaringombe.
On 30 December 2020, Venaani announced on his social media account that he tested positive for Covid-19.
Venaani was discharged from a local hospital on Wednesday and is currently home with his family. In fact, the official opposition leader last weekend lost his young sister Ujuore Haimene to Covid-19.
Many Namibians, including President Hage Geingob, have sent messages of condolences to the Venaani and Haimene family.
Covid cases
Yesterday, health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula announced 30 of Namibia’s health care workers have contracted Covid-19. The workers form part of 387 people who tested positive for Covid-19, according to yesterday’s national statistics.
According to Shangula, the 30 confirmed cases are of health workers from various districts. The confirmed cases form part of 2039 sample results received from the laboratories in the last 24 hours.
“From the education sector, we have 24 learners and 13 teachers from different schools, and 17 students from institutions of higher learning who have tested positive for Covid-19,” said Shangula.
Amongst the positive cases are 15 employees from the mining industry and sixteen crossborder region truck drivers. Shangula noted most of the truck drivers are foreign nationals.
Statistics indicate that Khomas region recorded the highest number of positive cases, having 94 cases, followed by Erongo region with 73 positive cases.
“The total number of active cases currently stands at 3 445. A total of 310 people are hospitalised, of which 30 are in intensive care units (ICUs). Khomas region alone makes up 32% of the hospitalised confirmed cases,” noted Shangula.
Shangula further indicated the country has recorded 437 new recoveries, which brings the total number of recoveries to 25 845 and a recovery rate of 87%.
