Corruption humbled me

- Martin Olembe Antindi

Yes, it has humbled me to the core leaving me with no energy and hope for a promising future; I keep on thinking how a handful of fellow members of the Swapo Party can put their interest first than that of the party and the nation. I use to ignore reports about corruption; I thought they were just politically motivated allegations to tarnish the image of the Swapo Party. The provision of factual information’s proven the harsh reality of the existence of a luxurious lifestyle in a country which is so stricken by poverty, especially by the party members that have been entrusted with the obligation of serving the nation, but instead betray this trust and use their positions in the party and the government to serve for themselves and their close family members. It dishearten me so much coming from a remote village and observe depressed young people drown into a state of despair and stress with no chances of having a breakthrough in life, because their futures have been sold away.

Being a regional youth leader, it stresses me more seeing my fellow youth suffering from all ills of life, but there`s little that we can do to help the situation, generally, youth are suffering from unemployment which has brought them stress and depression even, if you go into remote areas, there`s too much hardship brought by a lack of development, the only services that you can find in deep rural areas are education offered by non-boarding schools, and the health service offered by clinics that do not open during weekends. There are less tarred roads within regions; our people have to suffer more especially during the rainy seasons, most of the time I ask myself is it realy not possible to lay down even simple form of developments in our rural communities?.

I have always been a proud member of the Swapo Party and I will continue being one, because I believe that the Swapo party is a cultural organisation which is part of the establishment of the independent Namibia. On the contrary, responsibilities that I carried such as being an active member, footsoldier, and aspiring to be a politician has to come to an abrupt end, I would rather take a back seat in the party activities instead of being on the forefront of the party mobilisation and campaign to help the party to win elections so that elders will keep their positions in power and reward their family members and friends with tenders and shares in the state-owned companies to maintain the wealth of the country within a small circle of the rich, and few elites.

I have decided to quit any political ambition, instead work more on community activism and being an academic so that I will task myself to help my community where I came from irrespective of their political affiliations. I should also put it clear here that I’m strongly against the current party leadership, and I wish they can just do a honourable thing of resigning from the party leadership structure and the government. The whole current Cabinet should just resign and pave a way for new rebuilding of the party and an effective government. What they don’t know is that each and every day they are in power, they are drowning the party deeper into death, this Fishrot saga and other corruption reports will not disappear as many people wish for, instead more hidden facts will keep surfacing and doing more enormous harm to the party and the government.
