Ahmad Ahmad has resumed his role as the president of the Confederation of African Football( CA F ), the continental body has announced. The 61-year-old was banned for five years and handed a $200,000 fine by Fifa in November for contravening the governing body’s code of ethics.

He was accused of among other things, misappropriation of funds and abuse of office. “This Friday, January 29, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) issued a decision suspending the sanction imposed by the FIFA Judging Chamber against Mr Ahmad Ahmad, current president of the African Football Confederation (CAF). Therefore, it has done, regained its function,” CAF said in a statement.

During Ahmad’ s two month ban from CA F, Constant Omari acted in his place. The development comes ahead of the CAF presidential elections slated for next month, one which would have seen Ahmad banned from participating.

Asked if he would now seek to retain his seat, Ahmad said he would refer the matter to the CAF Governance Committee. Ahmad was elected CAF president in March 2017. His tenure has been marred by allegations of graft and abuse of office.

He was arrested in Paris by French authorities in June 2019 as part of a probe into corruption, breach of trust and forgery, but was later released without a charge. His first duty upon resumption of his presidency may be to hand over the winner’s trophy and medals at the CHAN 2020 finals in Cameroon on Sunday.
