Kilimanjaro Boxing has big plans for 2021
Northern-based stable MTC Kilimanjaro Boxing Club wants to make this year much bigger and better by hosting more bonanzas and other boxing activities in the northern parts of the country.
The club hosted three mega bonanzas last year in the north, which were all well received by the community. MTC Kilimanjaro Boxing Club owner Joseph Benhard yesterday said the club plans to go an extra mile this year by staging more events and making sure the youth benefit from all the activities.
Benhard said his boxers started training last week already and have been hard at work in preparation for upcoming tournaments.
“We started with training last week and everything is going well. Most of our boxers are eager and excited about what we have in store for them. This year will be another year as we plan to host more tournaments in the northern regions. This is because we want to allow our boxers to showcase their talent at both amateur and professional levels. Next month we will stage a tournament at Oshakati’s Independence Stadium. Another tournament will also be held somewhere in May and June as well as another later in September,” he said.
The promoter also reflected on last year’s journey, admitting it was a tough year due to the many negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. He, however, said he is proud of the work done at the club to pull through the tough times last year.
“Last year was a tough year, not only for us but for all sporting establishments around the globe. Last year started off badly as we had to cancel one of our tournaments when Covid-19 cases started spreading in Namibia. But luckily along the way, the Covid-19 measures were relaxed and things started getting better, that’s when we hosted our first of the year which was a success,” he added.
In 2019, MTC penned a three-year sponsorship deal worth N$1.3 million with Kilimanjaro Boxing Club, which sees the club getting an annual grant of N$400 000 for its various activities.
