Youngsters set coastal tennis tourney alight
THE Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) recently held its first junior tournament of the year at the coastal town of Swakopmund and exciting tennis action was on display during the three-day event.
The tournament saw players from Windhoek, Okahandja and coastal towns competing and a total of 58 entries, which comprised 39 boys and 19 girls.
George Louw emerged winner of the U/18 boys category, with Daniel Jauss and Dian Calitz taking second and third places. In the U/16 boys category, Oliver Leicher was crowned the winner followed by Joel Hiveluah in second place and Stephan Koeen in third place.
The girls U/16 division was won by Elze Stears and saw Lucinda Botes and Janine Esterhuizen walk away with second and third place respectively. Ruben Yssel dominated the U/14 boys division and saw Lian Kuhn finishing in second place and Antonio Tchivanda taking third place, while the girls U/14 was won by Hayley Kidd, with Joanivia Bezuidenhout and Odycia Karaerua coming in at second and third places.
Samuel Nel was on course during the entire tournament as he won the U/12 boys division
and was closely tailed by Luhan Nasilowski in second place and Markus van Heerden in third place. The U/12 division was won by Lila Kidd, and Mari van Schalkwyk finished second and Natalia Ouses took third place.
The U/10 boys category went to Samuel Lagvardi while Divan Engelbrecht and Luke Alvarey walked away with second and third
places. The organisers expressed satisfaction with the level of competition and how the players brought their best to the courts. “It was a top tournament and the standard of tennis played over the three days was exceptional, which predicts a wonderful, exhilarating year of junior tennis in Namibia,” said the organisers. – mkambukwe@nepc.com.na
