Governor applauds top-performing schools

… as Namib and Duneside shine

- Linekela Halwoodi

Erongo governor Neville Andre last week visited two of the top-performing schools in the region following the announcement of the grade 12 results.

The governor made the visits to Duneside High School and Namib High School on Friday last week to encourage a spirit of perseverance during the pandemic and to applaud

the learners and staff for the outstanding achievement in 2020.

During his address to the learners, the governor emphasized that what is important is the responsibility of everyone in the education sector and that the last responsibility lies with learners.

“I am here to tell you that what you have done is something that is very important and making us all very proud. Let this year not slow us down; let us just build onto what we have. Of course, as grade 11s, you have quite a responsibility to also show an example to the young ones. That is what we, as learners, need to do,” Andre said.

He urged the learners to start the course that will determine their future while they are still in high school, as this will propel their careers.

“Every day is a contribution in part of what you want to be in the future. Let everyday count,” the governor told the learners.

Also speaking at the Duneside High School, acting school principal Arthur Arnolds encouraged the team spirit showed by the learners and the teachers especially during the challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“These learners have been blessed with great potential. They realised last year that they are much stronger than they think they are. We are stronger; we survived,” Arnolds said.

While at Namib High School in Swakopmund, Andre said it is only up to the learners to show the final success.

“If the learner does not do what is expected, then we will not be able to succeed. What we have seen last year is that the learners of Namib High School are appreciating the contributions made all the stakeholders, teachers, principal, parents and the society; that is why we are celebrating today,” the governor said.

Also speaking at the gathering, Namib High School principal Roosmarie September revealed that the school, which is just over a century

old, was also declared a heritage site with 100% ranking.

She also applauded her staff for standing for education, as they were all readily available to return to the school amidst the lockdown last year to plan a teaching schedule.

“While other schools were still busy waiting for instructions, the school took initiative by starting. So, with that, you can see this morning that this was the result of teachers who are willing to always walk the extra mile,” September said.
