Communities within the Ondonga kind gd om have responded positively to the call of its king Fillemon Nangolo to clear the production field at Omutsegwonime in the Oshikoto region.

By Saturday, at least 10 hectares of the 100 hectares of the good production field had been cleared.

The production is geared to produce maize meal and mahangu to generate funds to assist the traditional authority activities and to feed the needy less privileged.

This, according to Nangolo, will enable the authority to be able to feed its people, rather than solely relying on government.

The project was launched by Nangolo in May this year.

Nangolo, when he visited the site on Saturday, thanked the community for responding positively to clearing the land.

“We expect the mentioned three districts to be taking to clear the land so that we can realise the dream for the authority to have a field that will feed its people,” said Nangolo.

He stressed the production project will also enable the authority to help communities that are affected by plagues such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said because of Covid-19, some communities’ harvests have been affected and the field can be used to close that gap.

Planting for the field is planned to kick off during the next rainy season.

Fillemon Nambili, who is the deputy head at Uukwanamba district, said despite a high number of people coming in to clear the field, they are adhering to the Covid-19 regulations in place.

He said those on site are divided in groups of 10 to avoid overcrowding at one place.

Moving forward, Nambili said there will only be 30 people placed on site per week.
