Candidates normally decide if they would prefer to follow a career in the Deck Department or in the Engineering Department:
Deck Department Careers:
• The candidate should complete an academic course which meets the requirements of STCW, at this stage a National Diploma or a Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Studies/Science.
• Followed by active time at sea (minimum 12 months) during which the candidate must complete a record book of STCW competencies.
• Once the official assessors are satisfied that all requirements have been met, the candidate must complete an oral assessment with the authority responsible for issuing the Certificate of Competence (CoC).
• Upon successful completion, the candidate will be issued with an Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch CoC and may be considered for placement as a Second Navigation Officer in the Debmarine Namibia fleet.
• In line with candidates’ capabilities and aspirations, candidates may proceed to apply for Chief Navigational Officer CoC and Master CoC upon achieving relevant competencies in terms of technical skills as well as leadership. Such candidates may be considered for the positions of Chief Navigation Officer and Captain respectively, upon meeting all requirements of the recruitment procedure.
Engineering Department Careers:
• The candidate should complete an academic course which meets the requirements of STCW, at this stage a Bachelor’s degree or an Advanced Diploma in Marine Engineering (Advanced Diploma requires a completed National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering).
• Followed by active time at sea (minimum 12 months) during which the candidate will complete a record book of STCW competencies and workshop training.
• Once the official assessors are satisfied that all requirements have been met, the candidate will complete an oral assessment with the authority responsible for issuing the Certificate of Competence (CoC).
• Upon successful completion, the candidate will be issued with an Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch CoC and may be considered for placement as a Fourth Engineering Officer in the Debmarine Namibia fleet.
• In line with candidates’ capabilities and aspirations, candidates may proceed to apply for Second Engineer Officer CoC and Chief Engineer Officer CoC upon achieving relevant competencies in terms of technical skills as well as leadership. Such candidates may be considered for the positions of Second Engineer Officer and Chief Engineer Officer respectively upon meeting all requirements of the recruitment procedure.
