Afrocat Lions roar to Khomas Super 10 victory

Afrocat Lions were on Saturday crowned champions of the 2021 Khomas Super 10 League after finishing top of the log with 14 wins from 14 netball matches.

In their two last matches of the season on Saturday, Afrocat Lions (s1) beat their second team – Afrocat Lions (s2) – 37-30, and Tigers 47-35 to amass a total of 42 points throughout the season.

Speaking after the awards’ ceremony held at the Patrick Iyambo netball courts, Afrocat Lions’ head coach Dimitri Bittler said it was a competitiv­e season, with all teams showing strength and zeal to win the league.

“It has been a roller-coaster of a season, but it is the hard work of seven years paying off finally. We have tried doing everything correct and 100% to get promotion to the top-flight league,” he told New Era Sport.

Asked about the way forward, Bittler said it is to work hard and improve on their current performanc­e.

“The way forward for us is definitely going to be hard work and the developmen­t of talent by looking at our grassroots structure to see who is going to come up and so forth, to ensure we maintain the team,” he added.

Wanderers (s1) ended second overall with a total of 36 points (12 wins), while Tigers finished third with 27 points from nine wins.

Meanwhile, Nust (1b) won the First Division with 51 points from 17 wins, and thus gained promotion to the Super 10 League next season. Nust (1b) edged out the Namibian Defence Force (NDF), which also ended on 51 points, with a better goal difference (313-234).

Gomonate Fella ended third with 40 points.

The Second Division saw Namibia Correction­al Services (NCS) triumph with 27 points from nine games, followed by Rehoboth in second place with 24 points, and Tigers in third place with 21 points.
