Businesses urged to help fight crime

- John Muyamba

RUNDU - Acting regional commander of the Namibian Police in Kavango East, Bonifatius Kanyetu has said the police alone won’t win the fight against crime unless various stakeholders come to the party.

He said the business fraternity needs to offer a helping hand to law enforcement to equip the force in their quest to make Namibia safe from crime.

Kanyetu made the remarks on Friday when he held a media briefing to showcase the equipment donated by the Walvis Bay Corridor Group in conjunction with the Road Fund Administration (RFA) “We are very happy to have received this donation. These are the equipment that we need for our operations. As you know, our ‘Boots on the

Ground’ is still ongoing and there was a need for us to have operational equipment,’’ he said.

“This donation is very important to us, we appreciate the Walvis Bay Corridor Group and the RFA who gave us three rechargeable torches,

11 reflector jackets, 10 traffic cones for road demarcations, four camping chairs, gazebos, two folding tables and that is what we need for our mini roadblocks, stop and search roadblocks and we also received four folding camping chairs,” he noted.

Kanyetu indicated that the assistance came at the right time, as they (police) are currently having operations on the ground. “We are delighted that our work will be easy, I should now urge other stakeholders and the business community to also come on board, imagine all of us are concerned about crime because its an enemy to all of us and when we join hands and give each other a helping hand, it makes fighting crime easy,” he encouraged. The acting regional commander stated that if other stakeholders, the business community and the community come on board and assist the police in their quest to prevent crime that will be appreciated.

“To the Walvis Bay Corridor Group and the RFA with my regional management of Kavango East, we thank you very much as you assisted us with the most needed equipment for our operations, you have made our work very easy,’’ he said.

“We urge you to continue as such, we regard you at this moment as our very potential partner in the prevention of crime not only in Kavango East but in the entire country, teamwork will help us much,’’ he stressed. Kanyetu thanked the community as they assisted the police during the festive season.

“I want you now to continue assisting us as we are now equipped so that we can at least have peace in the region, there’s no way that the police alone will manage to combat crime but when the community, church leaders and all in the sphere and corners of this country come together and fight one common enemy which is crime, I think we will be successful.”
