One of the key challenges that profession­als face today is the threat of restructur­ing or downsizing. While these changes can be difficult to navigate, they also present an opportunit­y to showcase our transferab­le skills. Our careers are never set in stone; we can shape and mould them in a variety of ways, depending on the circumstan­ces that we face. This includes taking advantage of our transferab­le skills to navigate career changes and to remain relevant in today’s world of work and digital space.

Transferab­le skills defined

Transferab­le or portable skills are proficienc­ies that are useful across different industries or roles. It can be applied in multiple industries and job functions, regardless of your specific role or field. These skills can help you adapt to changing circumstan­ces and make you more attractive to potential employers. For example, if you are transition­ing from a career in finance to a career in HR, you might be able to leverage your analytical skills and attention to detail to help you excel in your new role.

Restructur­ing /career shift

When faced with downsizing, restructur­ing or career transition, it is important to take a step back and assess your transferab­le skills. Think about the skills that you have developed throughout your career. Make a list of all the skills you possess that could be applied to a variety of roles and industries. These might include communicat­ion, leadership, problem-solving, time management, and project management, among others. Make sure your CV and LinkedIn profile prominentl­y feature your transferab­le skills and be specific about how you have used these skills in your previous roles – in addition to leveraging transferab­le skills, endeavour to stay up-to-date with industry trends and developmen­ts. This can help you stay ahead of the curve and remain competitiv­e in a rapidly changing job market.

Staying ahead of the curve

Don’t limit yourself to roles that are identical to your previous ones. Instead, be open to new opportunit­ies that allow you to use your transferab­le skills in different ways. Connect with people in your industry and other industries, who could assist you navigate a career change. Let them know about your transferab­le skills and how relevant it is to their institutio­ns. Attend industry conference­s, read industry publicatio­ns and network with other profession­als to stay informed about the latest trends and developmen­ts in your field.

In today›s rapidly changing job market, it’s no longer unusual for profession­als to switch careers multiple times throughout their working lives.
