Tribute to Ida Jimmy !Ha-Eiros
THE loss of Ida Jimmy !Ha-Eiros is deeply felt among Namibians, her family and comrades. Her departure marks a truly courageous woman, whose legacy serves as an inspiration of note, exemplary for women across the nation.
Ida Jimmy !Ha-Eiros, born on 16 November 1945, was a pioneer veteran of the Namibian liberation struggle. She joined Swapo in 1976 and undertook underground activities in southern Namibia. She was elected chairperson of the Swapo Party Women’s Council, and later became an advisor.
Despite facing imprisonment, including during her pregnancy, she continued advocating for Namibia’s independence. After her release, she served various roles within Swapo, including as a regional councillor and party coordinator.
She received numerous accolades for her fearless dedication to the liberation cause, including awards from Cuban president Fidel Castro and the Most Distinguished Order of Namibia.
My first encounter with the name Ida Jimmy came through the memoir of Founding Father of the Namibian Nation, Dr Sam Nujoma, ‘Where Others Wavered’.
Among the names mentioned, including the likes of Putushe Apollus and Anna ‘Kakurukaze’ Mungunda, is Ida Jimmy. She was one of those who intrigued my curiosity, as I had never heard of her name that carries this encouraging, yet daunting experience.
I was convinced after my research on the late Jimmy !Ha-Eiros that she was a trailblazer in the realm of women’s activism in Namibia. In a time when societal norms constrained the role of women in politics, courageous figures defied conventions and paved the way for future generations.
Ida Jimmy !Ha-Eiros is the first woman imprisoned by the South African regime. Her imprisonment, compounded by the fact that she was pregnant at the time, exemplifies her unwavering commitment to the liberation cause.
President Nangolo Mbumba’s emotional statement: “Namibia will never produce women like madam Ida Jimmy” underscores the profound impact of her journey.
Indeed, her trials and triumphs serve as a testament to the determined spirit of Namibian men and women, inspiring us all to strive for excellence and justice.
