SC verdict to shape political course
The leftists continue to push their demand for the removal of lame-duck Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala. The Congress party, despite the reconstitution of its central working committee in favour of Koirala, shows no sign of unity. Koirala clings to Prime Ministership despite the widespread perception, even within his own party, that his exit will put an end to all the agitation and the fears of rigging in the mid-term polls. The Royal Place may be ruing the haste with which it dissolved the lower house at Koirala’s controversial and challenged recommendation. The Congress, especially Koirala’s southern mentors are exercising their mental faculties as to how to retain him in power or, if that fails, how to bring another plaint Congress substitute to power if circumstances force Koirala to bow out.
