Stop Gorkha/ Gurkha recruitment

- By Sushma Shrestha

The British government is doing business and making a profit by supplying the Gurkha soldiers for the security of different countries. Besides, the British government is using the Gurkhas as the offensive force whether it is in the Falklands war or the Afghan war or elsewhere. Moreover, the British government has discriminated against the Gurkha soldiers on salary and pension. Still, the Gurkha soldiers are fighting the legal war against such discrimination.

Whether it is British Gurkha soldiers or the Indian Gorkha soldiers, they are treated as mercenaries and sending them to the war zones. In the 1962 Indo-China war, the Indian Gorkha Regiment force was sent as the offensive force in the war zone and hundreds of Nepali Gorkha soldiers lost their lives in the war.

The Indians have deployed the Gorkha soldiers in the Line of Control between India and Pakistan, where, frequent cross-firing is taking place. Accordingly, the Gorkha soldiers are being deployed in Indiaoccupied Jammu and Kashmir to suppress bloody violence.

Also, when the IndiaChina dispute occurred in Doklam and Arunachal Pradesh, India, instead of sending other forces, chose to send the Gorkha soldiers to the disputed territory.

When the Gorkha soldier will die in such battles, the Indian government doesn’t allow sending the dead bodies to the deceased's family in Nepal but cremate them in India.

In the name of the distribution of pensions to the ex-Gorkha soldiers, the Indian government is operating Soldier Board pension camps in different districts close to the Chinese border. In principle, Nepali nationals should not be used against the friendly countries of Nepal, in practice, both the UK and India have been using Nepali nationals under their military regiments against friendly countries of Nepal. If such a trend will continue, definitely, Nepal’s friendly countries would express strong reactions protesting Nepal’s existing foreign policy.

The need of the hour is to stop the recruitment of Nepali nationals into foreign military forces. Earlier, when the communist parties were out of power, they were lauded for stopping Gurkha/ Gorkha recruitments but when they joined power, they chose to remain silent on the issue. Such behaviour of the political leadership is harmful to the nation. Therefore, such recruitments have to be

stopped.
