Jöttnar Vanir
Made by British company Jöttnar, the Vanir is the benchmark mountain salopette. Built from Polartec® NeoShell®, it delivers true breathability, stretch and robustness in a fully waterproof package. Unlike most other waterproof legwear which tends to be carried in a pack and only worn when conditions turn, the Vanir can be put on in the morning and comfortably worn all day. Much of this is due to the fabric’s ability to breath and keep you cool when working hard, but also because of its cut. These bibs are designed for technical climbing and ski mountaineering and so the bagginess normally present in most generalist hardshell trousers is completely absent. The fabric has a pleasing soft handle to it and features 4-way stretch. This means that it moves and stretches with the legs and doesn’t make that distracting plastic-ey rustling noise that many other shell fabrics do.
The founding team behind Jöttnar are two former British marine commandos and also lifelong climbers and skiers. It’s clear that these bibs have been designed and built by actual users as the quality and attention to detail are exceptional. Since the company’s launch in 2013, it has carved out a niche in its home UK territory amongst the core climbing and ski-mountaineering community, with the Vanirs becoming a favoured bib amongst mountain rescue teams and mountain guides. Jöttnar has recently added a New Zealand/$NZD domain to its website and offers free shipping on all products from $300 NZD and upwards.
