McCartney vaulting into Britomart
Auckland’s Britomart atrium is being transformed into a pole vaulting arena on Wednesday night.
Olympic bronze medalist Eliza McCartney will be joined by a host of international talent in Athletics New Zealand’s Vertical Pursuit - the only street pole vault event of its kind in the country.
The field includes Canada’s Alysha Newman, who competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics and holds her country’s national women’s record, as well as Morgann Leleux, an up-andcoming star from the United States who was a silver medalist in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition.
Kiwi 17-year-old Olivia McTaggart will also compete - fresh off breaking McCartney’s U17 New Zealand record in November.
Event organiser Gareth Archer said it’s the biggest street event Athletics New Zealand had organised with some of the best international talent available.
‘‘It’s going to be very exciting,’’ Archer said.
‘‘It’s a great sport and a great spot and a great way to show it all off.’’
The competition, now in its second year, starts at 6.20pm with all results from the event counting towards official world rankings. Archer expected tonight’s free event to attract keen fans and curious bypassers.
Rio 2016 bronze medalist Eliza McCartney will grace the Atrium in Britomart tonight in a one-off street pole vault event.
