Violinist finds new path
A stalwart Ponsonby violinist is hanging up her strings with an illustrious New Zealand trio.
Justine Cormack was a founding member of chamber music group NZTrio but after 15 years has said it’s time for a new chapter.
‘‘It feels like a good time for me to move ... the trio is in a really solid place,’’ Cormack said.
‘‘It has a reputation to attract people to come and take it into the next era.’’
Cormack’s orchestral career included a stint as 1st Violinist in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, which culminated in her position as Concertmaster of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.
NZTrio is best known for incorporating many New Zealand compositions into its work and has played around the world.
‘‘It’s been amazing to play New Zealand music overseas, we really feel like we’re cultural ambassadors for the country,’’ she said.
Cormack said she doesn’t have any musical plans after NZTrio other than moving with her husband to a property outside of Wanaka.
‘‘I’m not retiring and I expect things to develop within music but I don’t know exactly what that’s going to be,’’ she said.
Cormack’s final performance with NZTrio will be on May 21 and 23 at the Loft at the Q Theatre.
