Donations down
Organ donation in New Zealand is far below international standards, with only 11.8 donors per million people. Even if a person has agreed to organ donation on their driver’s license, this decision can be – and often is – overturned by family members in discussion with doctors. Governmentled public consultation is aiming to change the way doctors discuss organ donation with families, standardise the way hospitals identify potential donors, and raise awareness of organ donation.
