Cut, don’t pull, ripe citrus. Mandarins, oranges, lemons and limes last much longer in your fruit bowl if the tip of the stem is still attached to the fruit.

• Dig Jerusalem artichokes for soups and roasts. As these tubers don’t keep well once out of the soil, only dig what you need for a meal.

• Wait until after the first frosts to harvest yams, swedes and parsnips. Their starchy roots taste sweeter after a cold snap.
