RESENE COLOUR CONSULTANT DEANNA HILLS TALKS ABOUT PAINTING: What’s your advice for painting in damp, cooler weather?
Firstly, check for, and remove, any mould on surfaces, especially in the corners. If mould is present, use Resene Moss & Mould Killer. Put a dehumidifier in the room for a day or two before painting to dry it out. Be careful using heaters – a fan heater is okay, but a gas heater will actually create moisture in the air. In cooler conditions, paint can take longer to dry, and in some cases it can run and/or sag. Either paint later in the day when the room has warmed up and aired, or do not put too much paint on the brush/ roller, to avoid sagging or running.
What is a water-based enamel and what are the advantages to using this product?
A water-based enamel is basically a hardwearing acrylic. It can be used both inside and outside and is ideal for areas where you want a tougher surface, such as hallways or kids’ rooms. The advantages are quicker drying and recoat times than for oil-based enamel, a harder, more washable surface than a normal acrylic and an easy clean-up – with water. Resene has four water-based enamels: Spacecote Flat, Spacecote Low Sheen, Lustacryl (semigloss) and Enamacryl (full gloss).
