DESIGN DECISIONS
DECIDE ON A THEME –
be it dinosaurs, diggers, Disney, fairies, princesses, pirates or kitsch Kiwiana – and a colour scheme before you go shopping.
COLOUR CODE
Stick to neutral wall colours and use cushions, throws and duvet sets for pops of colour. These instantly freshen a room and are easily changed as your children get older.
PLANTARAMA
Let your children choose their own indoor plants to care for. Popular species include carnivorous plants, such as Venus fly traps and Sarracenia pitchers; donkey tails and string-of-pearls succulents; and Mimosa pudica, aka the sensitive plant, which recoils when touched.
SAFETY FIRST
Use LED bulbs in bedside lamps and use cable ties to secure electrical cords.
STORAGE SAVERS
You can never have too many storage baskets and boxes in children’s bedrooms.
SMART COLLECTION
Start an art collection for your kids. Buy them a small work each birthday and, when they’re old enough, let them choose for themselves. Museum and gallery shops have a wide selection.
