Aus­tralian mi­cro­bi­ol­o­gist Dr Matthew Sul­li­van has pro­vided fresh hope for suf­fers of uri­nary tract in­fec­tions (UTIs) af­ter he un­cov­ered a ge­netic reg­u­la­tor that con­trols the sever­ity of UTI strep­to­coc­cal dis­ease. The dis­cov­ery is a ma­jor step for­ward in un­der­stand­ing the dis­ease, which af­fects up to 40 per cent of women at least once in their life­time.
