The beauty of beetroot

The humble beetroot is more than just a vegetable. Full of powerful properties, here are three facts about the bright red food you may have not known.

-

1 If you are feeling a bit low, why not have a bit of beetroot? They contain betaine, an amino acid that helps relax the mind and boost your mood, as well as tryptophan, a natural mood stabiliser. 2 Had a few too many to drink the night before but don’t want to resort to greasy food to make you feel better? Add some beetroot to your meal, whether it be in a smoothie or a salad. Betacyanin, the pigment that gives the vegetable its colour, is also an antioxidant and helps to speed up detoxification in the liver. This gets the alcohol out of your system faster! 3 Most people only eat the root part of the beetroot but in fact the entire vegetable is edible! The root and green leaves are full of goodness, such as iron and vitamins A and K. The leaves are especially great in helping to fight off osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease.
