In 2005, lies and deceit led to one of the most dramatic murder and suicide storylines to hit the cobbles. Katy Harris became pregnant by boyfriend Martin Platt – 20 years her senior – but her father Tommy persuaded her to have an abortion, making up a story that Martin was having an affair. When Katie discovered the lie she confronted Tommy at his garage and on the spur of the moment lashed out at him with a wrench, killing him. Unable to live with the guilt, Katy wrote a note telling the truth about her father’s death before drinking water mixed with sugar (a deadly solution because of her diabetes.) Martin found her unconscious but Katy died just after arriving at Weatherfield General Hospital.
